Why I Don’t Recommend Yelp for Small Businesses (Yes, It’s a Hot Take)
This might be a bit of a hot take, but after working with small businesses and helping manage their online presence, Yelp is one platform I usually don’t recommend.
Many people assume Yelp is essential for local marketing, but in reality, it often creates more frustration than value for small businesses.
Instant Telemarketing After Signing Up
One of the first things many business owners notice after creating a Yelp listing is the sudden wave of sales calls.
Almost immediately after registering, Yelp or affiliated marketing reps often begin calling to push advertising packages. For businesses using their phone as a primary customer contact line, this can quickly turn into unwanted telemarketing interrupting real business calls.
Basic Features Are Paywalled
Another surprising detail is that some basic branding features are tied to Yelp’s advertising plans.
For example, displaying your business logo on your profile can cost about $1 per day through their advertising subscription. While that might seem small, it adds up — especially when many other platforms allow branding features for free.
You Don’t Fully Control Your Listing
Another major issue is control.
Once a business is listed on Yelp, it can be very difficult to remove or fully control the information displayed. Listings often remain active even if the owner no longer wants to use the platform.
For business owners who prefer to manage their own online presence, that lack of control can be frustrating.
Where Small Businesses Should Focus Instead
Instead of spending time managing Yelp, I typically recommend focusing on platforms that actually drive local visibility, like:
Google Business Profile
A well-built website
Proper local SEO
Strong business systems behind the scenes
For most small businesses, those tools will bring in far more real customers than another directory listing.
Sometimes the best marketing strategy isn’t joining every platform available — it’s focusing on the ones that actually help your business grow.
